I have a light tan carpet that gets dirty very easily. I have paid a carpet guy to come out and clean it when it gets really bad because he always does a great job. Unfortunately, the carpet gets dirty fast, and I can't afford to keep paying him to come out and clean it every time it does. I have two young kids...10 and 6... and a small dog that forgets to go outside to relieve herself sometimes. I have used the Rug Doctor on my own several times on the carpet, and the cleaning was pretty good, but that thing is so darned heavy and clunky to use, not to mention the pain it is to keep emptying and replenishing water and cleaner. I purchased a Bissell cleaner from Sam's Club at one point figuring it should be good enough....wrong...it was horrible. It really didn't clean much at all. Back to the Club it went. A year or so went by after that, and I knew there had to be a better cleaner out there somewhere that I could afford, so I waited. I had a Hoover vacuum cleaner that worked really well, so I thought of trying a Hoover when one was on sale. I saw the Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner on sale at Kohl's for $399.99 and I had a 30% off coupon, plus I would get $10 in Kohl's cash for every $50 I spent. Great, I thought, here is my opportunity. I read all of the reviews here and figured that with over 90% of them being either a 4 or mostly a 5, I would try it. I purchased it today and ended up only spending $280 for it, plus after buying the cleaner and a couple other items, I ended up with $60 in Kohl's cash for later use. Not bad, I tell ya.
Now, for my review of the carpet cleaner........I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I have tried many carpet cleaners in the past, but this one is wonderful. First of all, I suggest you read the instructions very carefully to get familiar with how to use it before you actually start...it makes it pretty easy to use if you understand it well. I cleaned the main entrance to my living room, which gets extremely dirty, and it cleaned it to a nearly new-looking appearance with the first pass of cleaning. I was ecstatic. I ended up cleaning the whole house and can't believe the outcome. Everything cleaned up perfectly. I seriously feel that this cleaner has done an even better job than my carpet cleaning guy and the Rug Doctor. Honestly. I noticed there were two bad reviews on this product....I thought maybe those two people got lemons, or perhaps they don't realize that you have to expect a little mess when using any type of carpet cleaner...the Rug Doctor always had me cleaning up a bit afterwards, but it is expected, I feel, considering how clean it is getting everything. I think the tanks in this machine were pretty much adequate for the ease of use. I think the capacity was what I would expect. Anyhow, it was well worth the money I spent. Had I known it cleaned this well, I would have bought it at full price if it never was on sale. You won't be sorry.

I bought this to replace a 2-year-old Hoover "All Terrain" SteamVac that broke -- tank and brushes. The old machine is still serviceable (Hoover sent me a new tank and I fixed the brush mechanism myself) but I've relegated it to my shop.
This "Platinum Collection" cleaner is a better tank design -- the valves are better and the plastic material shouldn't crack as easily -- and the dual brush system seems quite a lot better.
I've used the new machine twice with good results. The new tanks are a bit harder to carry for refilling and the dirty water tank is a complicated design but, once I got used to it, it's all fine.
One thing: don't let anyone tell you that you can use this machine and not get a lot of dirty water everywhere when you finish and want to clean up. There's no way you can remove all of the bits that need to be rinsed off without spilling and/or dripping dirty water from the machine's internals. So be sure you put the machine somewhere you don't mind getting wet BEFORE you start taking it apart to clean!
That caveat aside, I'm quite happy with this new Hoover. I've only given it 4 stars because I want to wait and see how it holds up. The old machine cleaned very well, too, but it was NOT durable. To anyone who's considering the "All Terrain" instead of this model to save a few bucks I say: don't do it! The Platinum model is significantly better.

After calling 5 stores we finally found one at a Bed bath beyond 25 miles from our house. We paid $320 with the 20% off coupon. Not cheap! I must admit I was concerned about the quality of this cleaner being there is so much plastic. I am still concerned. As far as what this cleaner can do...it cleans like no other cleaner we have owned or rented. This Hoover really blows the rug doctor out of the water. We have 3 wiener dogs that shed a lot and they like to dig...meaning they track in a ton of dirt. We thought the rug doctor did a good job until we used this Hoover. It was like night and day. Our 12 stairs look like new, traffic areas look like new. We couldn't be any happier. 2 years ago we tried a professional cleaner with the steam machine in the truck and they did a decent job, but even the hoover beat their job. My only complaint is the cost of the recommended cleaning solution. We went through 100 oz to clean our house. Still not bad considering we paid $200 for professionals that didn't do as good as the Hoover. One other concern is no one carries the cleaning solution locally. I gave the this Hoover Platinum a 5 star being it does such a wonderful job getting our carpets like new. It really is amazing. I just hope the plastic holds up and that I can find the cleaning solution locally. I consider this a must buy...best buy!

This carpet cleaner did so good, it showed that the Rug Doctor we rented just a short time ago didn't clean nearly as good and cleaned the room again and the carpet was now much brighter. My wife loves the ease of use, just annoyed by the blue light(makes it harder for her see her work), I just covered it and it was fine. We had a cheaper version of the Hoover prior and wore it out, this is quite and improvement. I was impressed on how it comes apart for cleaning after use. The upolstry hose is much nicer and easier to operate, no extra connections.

I have had a higher end Hoover hot water extractor for many years now that I have used extensively but it recently died. I needed to get a new cleaner and was in the process of doing research when cleaning vomit became an issue. I decided to get the Hoover Platinum because reviews consistently said that it cleaned amazingly well and outperformed professional cleaners. I am a bit skeptical about these types of claims, but given the urgency of the situation I decided to give it a try. I have to say, that it performed up to the expectation of the reviews and the price. It is heavy, (of course my old one was heavy too and the new one outperforms it so dramatically it makes it worth it...) Also the plastic is concerning because it seems somewhat flimsy (though admittedly the clear plastic is nice because you can easily see fluid levels... It is relatively easy to clean (particularly compared to the old one) though it would be nice if the roller were as easy to pop out as the spin scrub brush. Overall, if you are really vested in keeping your carpets/rugs clean (and they say that dirt is the chief thing that breaks down carpet fibers...), then I would say it is a worthwhile investment. We were fortunate because we were able to take advantage of a labor day sale at Best Buy and got it for $339.99 instead of the $400 list. (Be sure to check and reference the internet site and even print it out if you go to the store because it is an online sale but they will price match it in the store.) Also, not using Hoover's cleaning solution voids the warranty because other brands supposedly oversuds and cause it to leak, etc. Hoover themselves recommends either the Platinum or the Ultra (which is cheaper). I just ordered the Platinum Pet formula because when you need a heavy duty cleaner, you need it.
