"wonderful product, just one draw back" 2009-09-12
By Ashley D. Parker (Leesville LA)
i bought this steam vac for my cleaning business. it does a wonderful job on both carpets and hard floors. only this i can say that i'm not very happy with is the amount of cleaning solution it uses. for the average house it takes three to four refills.

it is very easy to use and very simple to clean after usage.

"Dirt Devil Platinum Force Side-by-Side comparison with Hoover All Terrain Model F7452900" 2009-09-11
By Jennifer Ryan (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I just purchased the Dirt Devil Platinum force, and my friend next door brought over her Hoover F7452900 Steamvac All-Terrain Floor Cleaner, and we went head to head on my carpet. This is what we found:

First, they clean the same. In other words - from a cleanliness perspective you can't tell which area of the carpet was done by the Dirt Devil and which was done by the Hoover.

Second, on short pile area rugs the Hoover went behind the Dirt Devil, and picked up a very little extra water.

Third, we took both carpet cleaners on a super plush carpet - the kind you sink into. The Hoover picked up a significant amount of water more than the Dirt Devil. We left a small patch to dry on its own, but most of the rug we chose to go over the area with the Hoover to pick up excess water. On the small patch it took the Hoover section 5 hours to dry and the Dirt Devil section 10 hours to dry.

Fourth, on the super plush carpet - the dirt devil caused the carpet to pill and the Hoover didn't - or it picked it up. I am not sure what that means. It is merely an observation.

Fifth, I spoke with 2 repair/sales shops. They sell both the Hoover and the Dirt Devil. They both said that the Dirt Devil is far more reliable mechanically and if/when it breaks down it is cheaper and easier to fix.

Last, the Dirt Devil after you clean looks leaves a pattern on your carpet like truck tires have been run over your carpet verses the Hoover leaves a flat track. Probably not a big deal, just another observation.

Both machines were equally easy to push.

"Machine is not durable -- two major failures in two years" 2009-09-09
By D. B. Smith (Dismal Valley)
I bought one of these machines two years ago. My first impressions were very favourable -- it worked very well. A bit messy -- drips water everywhere -- but the cleaning performance seemed quite good.

Over the two years I've used the machine, perhaps, 4-5 times. I have always been extremely careful about cleaning the machine thoroughly after each use.

Nevertheless, I've recently had the rotary brush system fail -- locked up completely and refused to work -- and one of the plumbing seals on the freshwater rinse tank failed.

I was able to fix the brush system myself by taking the machine half apart -- the bearing on the turbine/flywheel (the brushes are driven by air power from the vacuum suction) had siezed and, once freed and lubed a bit, it works again.

However, the fresh water tank looks like it will require either a new seal or a completely new tank -- the unit is not usable as it is. Hoover sells replacement tanks for $42!

All-in-all, the good cleaning performance of this machine comes at an EXTREMELY high per-use cost if you consider that the brush mechanism will probably fail (out of warranty) and have to be repaired, plus you'll have to buy a new tank every couple of years.

One other point: this thing is called a "steam vac". There is no STEAM involved, whatsoever. The unit uses hot tap water and does not heat the water independently, let alone make "steam". Shame on you, Hoover.

"Do you want a product that only lasts for a few uses?" 2009-09-09
By Alesia
I wonder how many people who rated this item highly wish they had kept it for more than a couple of months before writing their review. Things you are guaranteed of: The thing will leak dirty water all over the floor. And possibly, the soap dispenser will stop working. And finally, when less than a year or 10 uses have gone by, you'll be stuck with a brokeny machine that makes a loud whirring noise.

The cost per use is ridiculous on this machine. You might as well just rent a more powerful cleaner from the store and clean half as often--you'd still come out ahead considering your frustration level would be lower!

"Steam Vac that produces no steam at all!!!" 2009-08-23
By Stephen L. Sadler (Montgomery, AL)
I will keep it short. Initially it cleaned the carpets okay not completetly. The unit DOES NOT produce steam as expected by the name. It barely heats up the water if at all. The bottom of the unit leaks and even after uses water will drain back out of the unit onto the floor that wasn't sucked up into the tank. It was basically a mess to use and requires too much work to clean small stains fast and effectively. Unless you want to set up, clean, and the clean-up and put away this unit for small stains it basically sits in your closet until you want to clean alot of surface area.
