I got this vac for Christmas after many not so subtle hints and lots of homework. If you have had a stick before, such as a Shark (I had two), you will find this thing is significantly better with regard to suction, more efficient, and has a good battery that holds a charge for quite awhile. I run the Hoover every couple of days. the first time I used it on the living room carpet, I was stunned by how much dog hair it got up despite the use of my "real" vacuum a couple of days earlier. It picked up pine needles and other holiday debris easily when I took down the Christmas tree as well. It cleaned my tiny bathroom of hair on the floor and rugs quickly and easily without sucking up the rugs in the process, and the size of it is small enough to fit into many tight places my regular vac couldn't reach. It also is fairly thin so it can reach under the kickboards on the kitchen cabinets.
It has a switch for hard floor use which is suction only, and a brush setting for carpet cleaning. It is the best on my laminant kitchen floor. The Shark used to shoot pine needles (tracked in from the pine tree outside the back door) behind it with the brush. The Hoover sucks those up easily. It deals with the dog hair in there too, and easily goes from throw rugs to floor without much effort.
As for emptying the cup, it is clear, and you can see when it needs to be emptied. The cup comes out with a push of a button. Another button opens the trapdoor on the bottom and it empties easily into the can. I have had no problem with the brush yet, but cleaning the Shark brush was quite a chore and the bristles wore out in less than six months. I'll let you know if that becomes a problem.
I'm very happy with this vacuum. It is the closest I've seen in a stick vac to a "real" vacuum cleaner without dealing with cords, weight and size.

I don't understand other people's complaints but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, based on their experience. My 20-year experience with Hoovers has been great. I have had this stick vac for 3 weeks and I use it every day on my hardwood floors and bathroom rugs. It picks up a lot of dog hair, dirt and dust. The battery lasts just fine for a stick vac. It also manuevers very easily. It is a stick vac, not a heavy duty machine. It does what it is supposed to do and it is a pleasure to use.

I saw other cordless vacs for half the price or less, but went with the Hoover name. I am very disappointed. It worked great the first time, but it is a messy job emptying the dirt cup and after using the vacuum twice a week for about a month, the roller brush was completely clogged with hair, dust, etc. I had to take the thing apart to clean it out. I do not have any pets and I am the only one in the house with long hair, so this seems like a lot of extra maintenance for a vacuum cleaner that was this pricey.
