"Seriously, don't even think about buying this vacuum." 2009-11-23
By Mark S. Murphy (NC)
So, my old vacuum broke and we needed an emergency replacement because we had company coming over. After buying it, I read Consumer Reports rating and it was favorable, so I was relieved. Well, that did last long. The first couple times I used it I was ok with it. But it really is a piece of crap. In fact, it is even worse than the $69 Eureka I used in college. Here are a few reasons why it sucks (in the bad way):

1. It doesn't suck (in the good way). I have never used a vacuum that has less suction.

2. You have to empty the can every single time you use it. If you don't, it literally will not suck up a small leaf off the floor.

3. It is messy

4. It is very heavy.

Do not be fooled by all the gadgets. That is the only way Hoover still sells vacuums IMO.

Your money would be better spent on a Panasonic.

 "Poor quality parts" 2009-11-11
By Waldo (Atlanta, GA)
This vacuum cleans well but the quality of the materials used are suspect. The plastic on the body of the machine broke where the bottomplate screws into. This is my fifth Hoover and it is the only one that is so poorly made. I still have two older Hoover that I use cleaning downstairs and the garage. One is over 15 years old. Of course all of this happened right after warranty and Hoover was sympathetic but was no help. No wife says she will no longer buy a Hoover since they evidently do not stand behind their products. The vacuum has incredible suction but the the beater path does sometimes clog and it is difficult to clean out. The accessories are easy to use but I wish that the handle was compatible with their older hose extensions.

"Yes, all the reviews are true. This TRULY is a flawed design in more ways than one" 2009-11-02
By snufflelofegus (New York, NY)
This thing sucks for these reasons...

1. The self cleaning filter doesn't work AT ALL. It clogs after only a few uses, and turns this thing into a nasty smelling, dust spewing beast. I think this thing actually creates more dust than it picks up.

2. This thing is WAY to heavy. A vacuum cleaner that is this heavy at least ought to be a decent performer, but its not.

3. The dust canister doesn't make a good seal to the vacuum, so whenever you take it out to empty it, crap ALWAYS falls all over the vacuum and gets dust everywhere.

4. The suction has been reduced to a quarter of what it was when it was new. After the self cleaning filter gets clogged, the suction is almost non existent.

I took it apart and cleaned the whole thing out, and it still works like crap. At first I thought it was just mine that was faulty, but as it turns out, 99% of people who own this thing experience the same issues that I have. Just read all the reviews right here on Amazon. Its unbelievable how badly this thing was designed.

 "love the suction power" 2009-08-15
By dvirxe3
I really can not say that this is the best vacuum for the price on the market because I haven't tried all of them, but it does do a very good job. It is true that the vacuum is hard to push, but only on the low carpet setting. However, I don't mind pushing a little bit hard to clean a few of my area rugs that are really low. I does do a wonderfull job anyway. its not like you have to push it hard in the same areas over and over again. You go over an area once and the jobe is done. if the vacuum is set on medium and high carpet and hard floor modes, there should be no problem. I have to say that the vacuum is a little bit big and heavy, but I doesn't bother me since I have no stairs and always use the rollers. In addition, I think that it's superior performance outweights the size of the vacuum. When I first tried this vacuum, I was amazed at the suction power. I first tested it on a mostly black area rug in the living room (you can see every little white spec on them),and it did an awsome job. Like i first said, I am sure there are other vacuums on the market that do as good of a job. However, you can not complain about this one. about the hepa filter, mine is not working right now, but I do know that you have to change them periodically. I do not know how often. I haven't changed mine in two years, but once in a while I will take the vacuum outside and clean the filter with a dry brush. it does get messy of course because there is a lot of dust in the filter. Maybe if I chaged the filter, I wouldn't have to go through the messy part. also, I read the manual and you are supposed to empty the cup after each use. I don't empty mine until is completely full. no wonder the filter won't work. I think that if you empty the cup after each use, the filter will be able to clean itself. but if the cup is full, then, the filter can not rotate and so can not self clean. maintanance goes a lot way and I have not done a good job at it. In stipe of it, the vacuum still runs great and does an awsome job. I am very satisfied with it. I have two kids. I have used this vacuum every single day for the last two years. It still works great. every time I use it, my floors and area rugs look super. the tools that come with it are also handy. it is easy to reach uder beds and in closets. I use it to clean my car, sofas, everything. as far as the price goes, I paid $150.00 for mine. it was half priced at sears about two years ago. Is it worth the msrp of $300.00? It is an excellent vacuum, so yes I think so. I you are looking to spend that much money on a good vacuum cleaner, go for this one. It will not dissapoint you.

 "Faulty HEPA filter design" 2009-07-03
By James C. Sandor (Columbus, NJ USA)
When this vacuum was brand new, it performed very well. However, as others have pointed out, eventually the self-cleaning HEPA filter stops working. It our case it was because the transmission that's responsible for turning the HEPA filter isn't durable enough. It's made entirely out of plastic.

After about three months of bi-weekly use the self cleaning HEPA filter stopping working (you can tell because it's visible and it stops turning). What happens then is that the area between the housing and the filter becomes completely clogged with whatever the vacuum is sucking up. I eventually took the whole thing apart and discovered what the problem was, that is, the stripped plastic transmission. I ordered a replacement (about $20) and installed it thinking that we had just had some bad luck with the original part. The replacement (which was exactly the same as the original) worked great...for about two months when the HEPA filter stopped rotating again. Repair again? Or replace?

Anyway, when it works, it works well. However because of the faulty design I cannot recommend it.
